Like most people, I strive to make sense of the world around me. Now and then a phrase or a melody, or an image or a story comes along that propels and provokes my imagination.

When that happens, I feel compelled to share it with anybody who will look and listen.

Music

I’ve been playing some instrument or other for fifty years. Learning to play the violin, in third grade, was the first thing I ever felt I could really do. My relationship with music evolved over the years, and my playing expanded and contacted in reaction to the other parts of my life, but I still feel awakened when I play and sing.

I have the good fortune, now, to play music with my whole heart. I’m grateful.

Songwriting

Bill Monroe called them his “true songs.” That’s a good name for what I try to do—when songs show up, I handle them gently so any truth that comes with them may stick around.

And they seem to get better when I hear somebody else sing them—it’s just part of the mystery, I guess.
